Story behind the celebration of Eid Ul Adha:
Muslims all around the world sacrifice (Qurbani) animals which are lawful or halal (animals which are allowed to be consumed in Islam) on the 10th, 11th, and 12th Zil Hajj.
The reason behind the festival is to remember the sacrifice that Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam, did in the path of Allah ﷻ . and on the command of Allah ﷻ .
Brief Story (Waqia):
As Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam was ready to sacrifice his most beloved thing, his son, Hazrat Ismail Alaihissalam.
Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam saw revelation in his dream to sacrifice the most beloved thing, in the path of Almighty Allah ﷻ , it was a test from the Almighty Allah ﷻ to Ibrahim Alaihissalam.
Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam was ready to fulfil the revelation of the dream, and asked his beloved son Hazrat Ismail Alaihissalam to go with him.
As father and son reached the place where, Ibrahim Alayhisalam was to sacrifice Hazrat Ismail Alayhisalam, he told about his intention to son, and asked if he was ready for the fulfilment of the command from Almighty Allah ﷻ .
Hazrat Ismail Alaihissalam said to Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam that it would be great honour to get sacrificed in the path of Almighty Allah ﷻ , and that he was willing to fulfil the revelation.
After seeing the determination and devotion of both Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam and Hazrat Ismail Alaihissalam, Almighty Allah ﷻ sent angel Gibrael Alaihissalam from the heaven with a lamb (from heaven) to be sacrificed instead of Hazrat Ismail Alaihissalam.
As Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam was about to sacrifice beloved son, angel Gibrael Alaihissalam swapped Hazrat Ismail Alaihissalam with the lamb from heaven.
Almighty Allah ﷻ awarded Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam on his success in the test, by ordering Muslims to remember his sacrifice and made sacrificing Wajib (Rightful) to those who are capable financially (according to the Islamic rules of being capable).
Thus, sacrificing on Eid ul Adha is in reality a remembrance of sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam.
Muslims around the globe every year on the occasion of Eid ul Adha follow the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam, who has the laqab of Khalilullah (friend of Allah ﷻ .)
