Gaza Ceasefire talks 2025, deal to have 3 phases?

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire deal, which will take effect from Sunday: Qatari Prime Minister.

According to the agreed deal the initial ceasefire will be of 42 days (6 weeks). The ceasefire deal comprises of three phases.

The deal includes hostage exchange in phases, thousands of Palestinians will be freed from Israeli jails. Hamas will release Israeli hostages in the phased manner as well. According to Aljazeera, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the Qatari prime minister said "the deal will lead to the release of Israeli captives and a surge in humanitarian aid to Gaza."

First phase will include:

A 42 days ceasefire initially. All the three phases are reported to be of same 6 weeks (42 days) duration.

In the first phase 33 or 34 Israeli hostages would be released, including elderly, children, women, sick and injured. Civilians over the age of 50 will be released. Israel to release a larger number of Palestinian kept in Israeli jails during this phase.

Displaced Gazans would be allowed to return to their homes, and Israel soldiers will evacuate from positions. Israeli forces will withdraw from Gaza’s population centres to areas no more than 700 metres (2,297 feet) inside Gaza’s border with Israel, in the first phase.

Agreement on the other phases of the ceasefire deal needs to be finalized in this phase.

Aid to be sent with up to 600 trucks per day, in the enclave.

Israeli forces will reduce their presence in the Philadelphi Corridor, the border area between Egypt and Gaza, and then withdraw completely no later than the 50th day after the deal comes into effect.

Second phase of the ceasefire:

If determined that the conditions have been met for a second phase, Hamas will release all remaining living captives, mostly male soldiers, in return for the freeing of more Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

Israel would initiate its “complete withdrawal” from Gaza.

Third phase and final phase:

Should the conditions of the second stage be met, bodies of the remaining captives will be handed over in return for a three- to five-year reconstruction plan to be conducted under international supervision.

Both president elect Donald Trump and outgoing president of United States Joe Biden has claimed responsibility for the successful ceasefire. Trump tweeted about the deal earlier on X (formarly Twitter), and Biden did a press conference telling about the details and declaring acceptance of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel

This ceasefire deal is the same as the May 2024 deal put forward by outgoing president Joe Biden. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected it earlier, but now has agreed to it, according to reports. Here's what the first phase of the proposed deal includes.

1st Phase of Ceasefire

The talks are taking place in Qatar capital Doha, with US, Egypt, Hamas, Israeli and Qatari top officials involved in the talks, in the same building. This is being called as a significant development, as earlier talks did not take place in this fashion.

The war on Gaza has been going on for more than 15 months now, the war has been termed as “Genocidal” by many, and Israel has been criticized internationally for its inhuman bombing and starvation strategy to innocent Gazans.

The war has taken a huge toll on Gazans. According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, in a statement, it said Israeli attacks since the start of the war have killed at least 46,707 Palestinians. The number of people wounded has also risen to at least 110,265, from 110,012 on Tuesday.
