Story: Rajasthan Assembly Election 2023 ; 21-08-2023;
Rajasthan Election 2023 all you need to know | Congress and BJP are in direct competition.
State elections in Rajasthan are set to take place in November-December this year.
The chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot is all set to lead Congress (governing party in Rajasthan), in the upcoming state election. Gehlot who is a 72 years old, congress veteran and a powerful leader in the party is up against the centre ruling BJP.
What should you know already:
Election will be held in or before December 2023, total 200 members of the state's Legislative Assembly will be elected. BJP and the Congress are the only two main political parties in the elections in Rajasthan.
Rajasthan has a history of alternating between the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) every five years. Neither party has been able to break this pattern and win a consecutive second term.
However, this time, INC leaders such as Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot have expressed confidence that their party will be able to retain power in the upcoming 2023 Assembly election.
Ashok Gehlot's work in last five years:
Ashok Gehlot has been a proactive Chief Minister since taking office, introducing welfare schemes for the people and addressing internal party conflicts.
In the first half of his term, he successfully defused a rebellion by Sachin Pilot, one of the top leader in Rajasthan, as well as in INC, which could have toppled his government. Gehlot has introduced schemes like:
Chiranjeevi Swasthya Bima Yojana, Free electricity for families (100 units) and specially for Farmers (up to 2,000 units per month), Free ration and Food, LPG cylinders to needy families, Old pension scheme for employees of state govt, corporations, academies and universities before 1 Jan. 2004, are some of the top achievements of the current state government.
BJP's current position in the state:
The BJP has not yet announced its Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming 2023 Rajasthan Assembly election.
Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has been the subject of much speculation, with some reports suggesting that she will be the BJP's choice for CM, while others say that the party is considering other options.
Raje is a popular figure in Rajasthan and has served as CM of the state for three terms.
The upcoming Rajasthan Assembly election is expected to be a close contest between the ruling party and the main opposition BJP. As various reports suggest, tough competition between the two.
It will be interesting to see how the much awaited Rajasthan polls turns out for both the Congress and for the BJP.
While the current CM Askhok Gehlot might also be seen in running for the CM candidate seat for the last time in his career, if he pulls off a victory in the state, then things would be tough for leaders like Sachin Pilot, who are waiting for their turn to take the front seat from quite some time now.
Pilot has been a subject to serious concerns in the past to Gehlot's leadership as well as to the Congress leadership.
Sachin Pilot might be a key player:
Sachin Pilot, 45, is a popular leader in the Indian National Congress (INC) and has a strong following in Rajasthan.
He is also backed by a significant number of MLAs in the state government, who believe that he would be the best person to be the next Chief Minister.
Although Pilot and Gehlot did come along and vowed to work together to repeat the congress government in the state this time around, both the leaders share a sorrow relationship in the past. Pilot has been critical of the Gehlot leadership in last 5 years or so.
If things go as Congress has planned, Sachin Pilot would be a key player in the election season in coming days.
