Russia Ukraine war update- Day: 62;
Diplomacy & Talks:
• Ukrainian officials said heavy fighting continued on Tuesday in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
• Russian President Vladimir Putin met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in Moscow to discuss "proposals for humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians," according to a UN statement.
• Putin agreed "in principle" to UN and the International Committee for the Red Cross's involvement in the evacuation of civilians in Mariupol.
• This was the first time UN Secretary-General went to Russia since the war begian, while Antonio Guterres hoped for peace to prevail in the region.
Putin agrees in principle to help evacuate civilians in Mariupol steel plant: a statement from the UN addressing the meeting between Putin and UN chief Guterres noted that the Russian president in principle agreed to allow the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol – together with the UN, the International Red Cross, Russia’s defense ministry and Ukrainian officials, reported by Al Jazeera.
Putin has said his country and Ukraine were continuing talks in an online format. At the start of his meeting with UN Secretary-General, Putin also said he hopes that the talks would yield a positive result.
Russian casualties:
• Russian troops casualties is farely been harder to assess as many different figures have surfaced during the past 60 days, here's some of the claimed figures from different parties.
The Russian defence minister said on March 25 – that 1,351 of its soldiers have been killed in combat, while 3,825 were wounded.
But in recent talks with Sky News the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said- that the deaths of many soldiers are a ‘huge tragedy’ here's what he said to Sky News, “Yes, we have significant losses of troops and it is a huge tragedy for us,”.
This statement many believes signals towards a large number of troop losses, that may have occured to Russia.
Ukraine says 19,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.
Russia has lost around 15,000 army personnel in the ongoing war with the neighbour Ukraine, according to UK.
Civilians Casualties:
• At least 1,500 civilians have been killed so far, according to the United Nations, which fears the real number to be far higher.
More then 5 million Ukrainians said to have fled the country since the Russian invasion begain on February 24, and the number could well double if the current onslaught went on, according to UN.
US, allies promise more arms for Ukraine:
• The United States and European allies pledged new packages of heavy weapons for Ukraine during a meeting on Tuesday at a German airbase, according to Reuters.
• Germany in a new foreign policy move decided to send dozens of thanks to Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned western countries that conflict in Ukraine could escalate into World War III, says Western weapons sent to its neighbour “will be a legitimate target”.
• Moscow accused that the West is fighting a proxy conflict with Russia.
Energy War:
Russia to cut its gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria from Wednesday: Russian energy giant Gazprom has told Poland and Bulgaria it will halt gas supplies from Wednesday. Poland and Bulgaria would be the first countries to have their gas cut off by Europe's main supplier since Moscow started what it calls a military operation in Ukraine on Feb. 24. The decision came at a time when Russia and West are engaged in a bitter spat over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
