I Love Mohammed Mustafa ﷺShah Faisal masjid location: The national mosque of Pakistan Shah Faisal Mosque is located at the end of Shaharah-e-Islamabad, against the backdrop of the majestic Margalla Hills.
Shah Faisal Mosque is the largest mosque in the Pakistan and it is the sixth-largest worldwide.
The mosque has become one of the most visited landmarks in Pakistan, attracting millions of worshippers, travellers, and architecture lovers from around the world.
History of Shah Faisal Mosque
Pakistan wanted a mosque that would serve as a national symbol of unity and represent the spirit of Islam on a global scale.
This vision got true momentum in the 1960s, when then Saudi Arab King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud made a commitment to construct a national mosque in Pakistan.
In 1966 on his visit to Pakistan he initiated the project.
In 1969, an international competition was announced, inviting architects from around the world to submit their designs.
Out of 43 submissions from 17 countries, the winning design was presented by the renowned Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay.
King Faisal masjid Foundation and Construction
1976 – The foundation stone was laid by King Faisal’s successor, King Khalid bin Abdulaziz, after King Faisal’s tragic assassination.
The mosque was named Shah Faisal Mosque in memory of King Faisal’s vision and generous contribution.
1976–1986: The construction started in 1976 and was completed in 1986. The construction took nearly a decade.
Funded mainly by Saudi Arabia, the cost of the mosque amounted to 120 million Saudi Riyals (approx. $120 million at that time).
The mosque was completed in 1986 during the government of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who is also buried near the mosque grounds.
Faisal mosque construction
Vedat Dalokay’s design was inspired by a Bedouin tent, symbolizing simplicity and spiritual devotion.
Instead of traditional domes, it was composed of geometric shapes with jagged edges and curves.
Key features of Shah Faisal mosque:
Desert tent: The prayer hall of Shah Faisal Mosque is an enormous, angular tent that is reminiscent of the Bedouin shelters. Covered with white marble and decorated with Quranic calligraphy.
Four minarets: It consists of four minarets, which are approximately 90 meters high (295 feet), influenced by Turkish and Middle Eastern architecture.
There is white marble indoors, and the light reflects off it.
The walls are covered with Mosaics and calligraphy by a Pakistani artist, Sadequain.
The centre of the hall has a chandelier that is of Turkish origin.
Because the mosque sits elevated, against the Margalla Hills, its silhouette commands the skyline.
From many vantage points in Islamabad, you see it as a graceful white gem poised against the green hills.
Worshippers: The ability to accommodate 100,000 worshippers at a time, making it one of the largest mosques in the world upon completion.
It was among the world's largest mosques until the early 1990s. Now it's Pakistan's largest and ranks among the world's largest.
A lack of a dome, sharp lines, and an interplay of open and enclosed spaces have influenced mosque design throughout Pakistan. As an example of modern minimalism expressing faith, architects, and students often refer to it.
It is often used for state ceremonies, Eid prayers, and religious gatherings, making it a central hub of spiritual and cultural activity.
Local Insights of Shah Faisal Mosque
Visiting, get there early in the morning or in the evening.
The angular surfaces are dramatically lit by light and, throwing sharp shadows and lightening calligraphy.
Residents usually climb to Daman-e-Koh or other vantage points to make panoramic views of the mosque and hills, and clouds.
Inside, you’ll find more than a prayer hall: lecture rooms, a library, and even a small museum in the courtyard zone.
The grounds once accommodated the International Islamic University before it moved.
During Fridays and during Eid, the mosque is filled with life, local worshippers flock to the mosque even in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and other areas.
For Islamabad residents, Shah Faisal Mosque is part of their daily visual and spiritual life.
People who pass the city tend to look at it, reminding them that they are not lost in purpose and belonging.
Local Rhythms, Challenges, and Meaning
The exterior and tiles have worn over time due to environmental elements like heat, dust, and air pollution.
Both the local government and religious endowments oversee the continuous maintenance.
Parking and access to the surrounding roads can occasionally be crowded, particularly during busy prayer times.
However, the local population reverently approaches the mosque.
Street sellers outside the main door offer prayer beads, soft drinks, and dates.
Carers clean up the courtyards every hour.
It is a place of daily living, urban pace, and dedication. You enter tales of people, faith, and Pakistan's changing identity when you visit the mosque.

Major renovation plan from Saudi government
The Saudi government has shown interest in funding a major renovation covering repairs to restrooms, electrical systems, and parking facilities.
CDA (Capital Development Authority, Islamabad): A special maintenance wing has been set up by the CDA to handle cleaning, landscaping, and structural upkeep.
Hailstorm: In April 2025, a severe hailstorm damaged parts of the mosque, including glass panels and roofing, sparking urgent repair plans.
Public feedback: Public feedback has led to better monitoring of services like shoe storage, cleanliness, and ablution facilities.
Tourism: The mosque continues to grow as a tourist attraction, with expected upgrades in lighting and landscaping to enhance the visitor experience.
Shah Faisal Mosque in Islamabad not only symbolizes the deep friendship between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan but shows strong Islamic foundation in the making of Pakistan, with a unique place in the Islamic world.
The mosque continues to inspire millions as a beacon of faith, culture, and brotherhood.

They should not only view a mosque, but also get a glimpse of Pakistan's history through the sky, marble, and concrete.
