Story: Southwest airline chaos due to bad winter weather; 28-12-2022;
The Southwest airline in US is facing chaos due to major winter storm, the airline had to cancel thousands of flights in the span of 48 hours. People were left with chaotic luggage handling issues due to the cancelled flights, many were left stranded at the airports for hours.
The airline is one of the major airlines of the United States and the world's largest low-cost carrier.
• Southwest Airline flights cancelled because of worst winter storms in all around the US, according to various reports the southwest airline suffered the most as it had to cancel 5,400 flights in the span of less than 48 hours.
The airline was established on March 15, 1967, by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King, it uses a rolling hub and “point-to-point” network and allows free checked baggage as its operational system, which is unlike the other major airlines who use “hub and spoke” system, and this is the one of the reason being considered for the current disruption the airline is facing.
The airline has nearly 66,100 employees and operates about 4,000 departures a day during peak travel season, as of November 2022, Southwest Airlines has scheduled flights to over 100 destinations in 42 states, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, the newest being Syracuse. The airline has 15 focus cities.
The officials from Southwest said in a recent statement that they are working hard to solve the operational issues caused by the continuous days of bad weather conditions.
• The reason behind the huge mess at Southwest airline is the lack of overall infrastructure, management, according to the president of the Southwest airline pilot association and a captain at southwest.
The cancelled flights came with the lost and strangled luggage burden for the people flying with Southwest in the last two days across the country, many had to wait for an hour to collect their luggage.
Southwest canceled more than 2,900 flights Monday — at least 70% of its schedule for the day — and more than 2,500 flights Tuesday as of 9:10 a.m. ET — at least 60% of its schedule, according to flight tracker FlightAware.
Parts of the US could see another 12 inches (30.48 cm) of snow after days of devastating blizzards that have caused chaos across North America – as New York's governor warned: “We know that the storm is coming back.”
The extreme weather has not let go of North America yet, with fears the storm that has affected Buffalo is not over and there is a “potent surge of moisture” threatening to bring flash floods to the Pacific Northwest and California regions on Tuesday.
President Joe Biden has authorized federal support for New York state, where tens of thousands of people have been left without power in the storm. Reported by Sky News
