Almost 40% of the world population cannot afford a healthy diet, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). That's 3.1 billion people out of 7.98 billion.
October 16 marks World Food Day, aimed at raising awareness for the issue of hunger around the world and the need to ensure everyone has access to a healthy diet.
• World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organization's 20th General Conference in November 1979, the day has been observed every year in more than 150 countries.
The world food day also commemorates the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945.
The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
People around the world celebrate the World Food Day, in order to raise awareness towards the requirement of not wasting the food, and how valuable it is for us. Social media networks flood with posts of people celebrating the World Food day, each year. People participate in many ways, some share delicious recipes they cook, while other share pictures and videos of food over various social networks.
• The need of observing the world food day in these days is much required than ever. People are need to be educated as, 1/3 of all food produced globally goes to waste, while as many as 811 million people go to bed hungry each night.
