What is DeepSeek

DeepSeek is a Chinese AI model that was launched on January 20, 2025. This AI model is going viral and has achieved groundbreaking development in the artificial intelligence field so far.

The model is free to use and is open source on GitHub, allowing developers to access its underlying code and create their own versions of the AI model.

DeepSeek is a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and other large language models.

Its latest model is called R1, which is trending worldwide. The R1 model has quickly gained recognition for its impressive performance benchmarks, against other large models, namely ChatGPT.

The model was developed in just two months in China, with no more than 200 developer team onboard.

The model is cheap and faster than many top paid model developed in U.S.

Another shocking thing about this model is that it was developed with just $500 million, unlike the popular billion dollar AI models that are being developed and run in the United States.

The model is trending in App store, with taking first place taking over the OpenAI's ChatGPT.

At the time of writing this, the official website for Deepseek was facing difficulties in new user sign-up due to, what the website states, “large-scale malicious attacks on DeepSeek's services”

We could not register to try out the model capabilities ourselves.

Though the website also stated that, “Registered users can log in normally.”

The launch of DeepSeek has shaken the tech community the same way as the ChatGPT did just recently.

The Deepseek provides unique in app HTML view or live view for the Application developers, to test the code on the platform itself before implementing it onto their own app or website.

The prompt response from the Deepseek R1 is comprehensive, detailed as compared to ChatGPT.

The overall cost to operate the Deepseek is just few cents that make it stands out in comparison to OpenAI's ChatGPT which is priced at $2 for 1 million (1,000,000) tokens.

Deepseek in India

Deepseek is a Chinese AI model and the Indian ban on Chinese apps has been the case in recent history, just like popular Chinese app TikTok, WeChat, etc.

The Deepseek is currently accessible in India, and users can create their free account with the email option.

The future of the availability of the Chinese AI model in India is uncertain, given the fact many top applications from China are already facing a ban in the India, due to security concerns.
