Who founded Oman

Oman did not begin with a single founder. Its civilisation is thousands of years old, but few rulers played a particularly important role in establishing the modern Oman.

Sultan Qaboos bin Said (1970–2020) is widely credited with founding modern Oman. His rule, known as the Omani Renaissance (Nahda), transformed the country from isolation into a unified, developed nation-state with modern institutions, infrastructure, and international standing.

On 23 July 1970, Sultan Qaboos bin Said overthrew his father and launched the Omani Renaissance (Nahda). Unified the coast and the interior into one country. Changed the official name from “Sultanate of Muscat and Oman” to simply Sultanate of Oman.

Another person who is known as a founder of the Oman was Imam Ahmad bin Said Al Busaidi.

Imam Ahmad bin Said Al Busaidi (also known as Ahmad bin Said) was the founder of the Al Busaid dynasty. He is regarded as the Founding Imam of the modern Omani state, and the Al Busaid dynasty has ruled Oman continuously since 1744.

In January 2025, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik announced that National Day would move from 18 November to 20 November in order to honour the Al Busaidi dynasty’s founding.
