Gol Gumbaz history

Gol Gumbaz is a remarkable architectural masterpiece that attracts visitors and archaeologists from around the world, who come to admire its grand dome built without internal supports.

Although impressively simple in design, it is considered a structural triumph of Deccan architecture.

The structure composed of a cube measuring 47.5 meters (156 ft) on each side, capped by a dome 44 m (144 ft) in external diameter.

The dome is supported by eight intersecting arches formed by two rotated squares, creating interlocking pendentives.

At each of the four corners of the cube are dome-capped octagonal towers, each seven storeys high with a staircase inside.

The upper floor of each tower opens onto a round gallery that surrounds the dome. Inside the mausoleum hall is a square podium with steps on each side.

In the middle of the podium, a cenotaph slab on the ground marks the actual grave located below.

In the middle of the west side, “a large half-octagonal bay” protrudes out.

With an area of 1,700 m2 (18,000 sq ft), the mausoleum has one of the biggest single chamber spaces in the world.

Taj of the South

Gol Gumbaz is the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah (r. 1627–1657), the Sultan of Bijapur (now Vijayapura).

Gol Gumbaz is a historical and popular Indian architectural masterpiece, and the resting place of Mohammed Adil Shah and his family.

It is a popular tourist attraction in Vijayapura, Karnataka, and is sometimes referred to as the “Taj of the South.”

Gol Gumbaz is one of the most famous surviving monuments of the Adil Shahi dynasty.
