Shah Jahan the fifth Mughal emperor of India, was a ruler renowned not only for his leadership capabilities but also for his great architectural accomplishments.

Red Fort history

The Taj Mahal in Agra and the Red Fort in Delhi are two of the most famous monuments in the world, were built by Shah Jahan, who was one of the greatest rulers of the Mughal Dynasty.

In 1638 when the emperor moved the capital of India from Agra to Delhi, a new royal palace was constructed.

Known as the Red Fort (Lal Qila), it was begun around 1638 and completed by 1648.

The name “Red Fort” comes from the massive red sandstone walls, some up to 110 feet high, which surround this magnificent piece of Mughal architecture.

The palace within the Red Fort is made of white marble and richly decorated with gold, precious stones, and intricate carvings.

Shah Jahan's throne stood in the center of the palace.

The Red Fort served as the center of the Mughal Empire for more than 200 years.

Red Fort (Lal Qila) is actually a vast complex of interconnected pavilions,each designed with a specific purpose and function.

Khas Mahal

The Khas Mahal served as the emperor's private quarters and was among the most exquisitely decorated pavilions.

Diwan i Khas Red Fort

All public audiences and state functions were held in the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), while private meetings took place in the Royal Tower, or Shah Burj.

To the north of the Diwan-i-Khas lies the Hammam (royal bath), consisting of three marble chambers separated by corridors.

The floors of these apartments are built with marble, inlaid with floral patterns of multicolored stones.

To the west of the Hammam stands the small mosque, called the Moti-Masjid (Pearl Mosque), built by Aurangzeb in 1659 for his personal use.

The prayer hall of the mosque is inlaid with outlines of 'Musallas' (small mats for prayer) in black marble, and it stands at a higher level than the courtyard.
