    Ismail Haniyeh the political leader of Hamas (Palestinian resistance group), assassinated at Haniyeh’s residence in the Iranian capital, Tehran. One of his bodyguards was also killed in the attack.

    Israel is yet to comment on the incident.

    The Turkish Foreign Ministry has condemned the “heinous” assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, the Anadolu news agency has said.

    Haniyeh’s assassination “once again demonstrates that Israel’s Netanyahu government has no intention of achieving peace” and the “region will face much larger conflicts if [the] international community does not take action to stop Israel,” the ministry added.

    Russia:

    Russia called killing of Hamas leader ‘unacceptable political murder’, RIA reports.

    “This is an absolutely unacceptable political murder, and it will lead to further escalation of tensions,” Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted as saying.

    Iran:

    Iran’s National Security Council meets to discuss response: Report.

    Members of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council along with senior commanders from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have convened a meeting to discuss the country’s response to Haniyeh’s assassination, the Reuters news agency reports.

    Palestinian group Hamas has released a statement regarding the assassination of its political leader Ismael Haniyeh in the Iranian capital Tehran. Here it is in full:

    In the name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful (And do not think that those who are killed in the way of Allah ﷻ are dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.)

    The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns to our great Palestinian people, to the Arab and Islamic nation, and to all the free people of the world: Brother, leader, martyr, Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh.

    The head of the movement, who was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran, after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president. To Allah ﷻ we belong and to Him we shall return. And it is a jihad, victory or martyrdom

    Haniyeh was responsible for talks and negotiation in support of Hamas resistance movement for more than a decade. He was on Israel's hit list since a decade.

    The loss is grim:

    According to the The Muslim 500 website Ismail Haniyeh was a Sunni Muslim. Haniyeh was elected as Head of Hamas Political Bureau in May 2017 succeeding Khaled Mashal.

    Haniyeh was a senior political leader of Hamas for over 20 years. Hamas, launching the October 7 attacks, made him one of the most popular politicians around the world.

    After Hamas launched Al-Aqsa Flood operation against Israel's continuous aggression on Palestinians and specially repeated attacks on holy Al-Aqsa mosque, according to the website "Haniyeh delivered a speech reaffirming Hamas’ commitment to the Palestinian cause and their determination to resist occupation."

    The Muslim 500 also reported that, Haniyeh emphasized the importance of unity among Palestinians and called for international support in their struggle for self-determination. Haniyeh said that Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Haram Al-Ibrahimi were red lines; That even if the whole world stood silent to it, the resistance would not. Haniyeh condemned Israel’s assassination of sheikhs and scholars and said that Hamas had confirmed intelligence that the occupation intends to impose its complete autonomy over Al-Aqsa Mosque and therefore this was a call to the whole Ummah to jihad. Haniyeh also said that normalization will not end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Our aim is clear: to liberate our land, our holy places and Al-Aqsa Mosque, and to liberate Palestinian prisoners being tortured in Israeli prisons.”

    Hamas has vowed to take revenge:

    Haniyeh’s assassination ‘will not go unpunished’, says Hamas official: The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh is a “cowardly act that will not go unpunished”, Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV has quoted senior Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk as saying.

    Who is Ismail Haniyeh:

    He was born in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza to parents who fled from the city of Asqalan after the State of Israel was created in 1948. Haniyeh studied at the al-Azhar Institute in Gaza and later at Gaza’s Islamic University, from which he graduated with a degree in Arabic literature.

    While at university in 1983, he joined the Islamic Student Bloc, a precursor to Hamas. He climbed the ranks within Hamas as a close aide and assistant to Hamas’s co-founder, the late Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Haniyeh was imprisoned multiple times by Israeli authorities and lived in and out of the Gaza Strip after facing deportation and assassination attempts. Earlier this year, an Israeli attack killed three of his sons in northern Gaza. According to a news report by Aljazeera
