Canada vs. US economical war ahead? | Trump Canada tariffs?

The 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, said in his inaugural address to hit Canadian with 25% tariffs on the imports coming Feb. 1, 2025.

Responding to the threat, Canadian Prime minister Justin Trudeau has said in his press address to fight US “dollar-for-dollar”, if Trump tariffs Canada.

Trudeau went on to say “everything is on the table.” and that his country will respond “robustly” if US President Donald Trump follows through with imposing tariffs on Canada, “If there are unfair tariffs, we will respond robustly, and we will be there to support Canadians and protect our interests,” Trudeau said reporters on Tuesday.

Canada vs US trade war ahead?

Donald Trump has been hitting the key US allay and neighbour Canada since a very long time now, with statements like making “Canada the 51st state of America”, or criticizing the US money going to Canada (US provides foreign assistance to support economic development, etc to Canada.)

The latest Trump statement targetting Canada came just a day ago, where Trump said he would put 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.

Trump also included Mexico for the 25% tariffs, he said his administration will impose a 25% tax on goods from Canada and Mexico that may come as soon as February 1.

It is noteworthy that America relies heavily on Canada for the cheap and reliable energy supply. Trudeau highlighted this point in his statement, “Canadian energy powers American manufacturing, businesses, and homes. Of America’s top five trading partners, Canada is the only one with whom the United States runs a trade surplus in manufacturing, and Canada buys more goods made by Americans than China, Japan and Germany combined.” he said.

Trump on Monday ordered directs officials to analyse how the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (the USMCA) is affecting American workers and businesses — and whether America should remain in the free trade agreement.

The four-year term as US President has begun for Donald Trump for second time, and with this it will be interesting to see how the trade relations and bilateral relations would shape out between Canada and United States of America.

Donald Trump has signalled “big expansional plans” this time around according to many experts, with eyes on big prices like, Greenland, Panama Canal, and boosting foreign revenues from countries by trade tariffs.
